Cinemagraph

John Bird

Cinemagraphs are still images that contain moving video footage allowing a passage of time to be viewed. Cinemagraph is a technique of blending the effects of images and videos. Jamie Beck was the first known user of this technique for a fashion magazine in New York, in collaboration with motion graphics designer Kevin Burg. Many designers have create similar forms of cinemagraphs. Cinemagraphs are typically simply created as animated .gif files making them easy to use on a web page.

Above is my first experiment using cinemagraph. It is a tool that blends both the still imagery and video footage together to section out a certain movement whilst keeping other things still. As in the example above you can clearly see that the subjects face moves dramatically yet the background stays the same, that is through the use of animation on Photoshop CS5. As it was a GIF file originally I could not upload it to YouTube so I exported it as a .mov file to embed it onto this page, as it was a GIF the quality is not great. But it gives a rough idea of my development in the skill of cinemagraph.
