Henri-Cartier Bresson

Before deciding to do my photo-essay I looked at some of Henri–Cartier Bresson’s work. I like a lot of Henri’s work on street photography so I decided to use his work as inspiration for my own photo-essay.  I like decisive moments shots a lot because the picture is taken without any thought and it the leaves viewer questioning what the picture is about. Below are a couple of my favourite images of Henri–Cartier Bresson’s work.

I like this image a lot because as a viewer its leaves me questioning why did jump? Is the water shallow or deep? Is he trying to run on water? I like how the person is silhouette which again questions me who and what this person looks like. By looking at this picture can can see Henri used a high shutter speed to capture the person still in motion in mid air.

The Picture of the boy smiling  to the left holding two bottles. This picture again leaves me thinking what is the boy happy about. I like how he used a low depth of field and the boy as the focal point in this picture. He also uses a high shutter speed to freeze the motion of this boy walking.

I like is a lot because we haven't got a clue what he's taking a picture of which makes it a breaking the edge image. I like how Henri focused on the persons camera and his face is slightly blurred with the background completely blurred. He again must of used a high shutter speed to capture this person still taking a picture of whatever he's taking.

Matt Stuart

Another one of my favorite street photographers is Matt Stuart. He’s known for his creative images. Stuart’s work is humorous and spontaneous. None of his photographs are staged, there all decisive moments unless he’s doing commercial work. Stuart uses a Leica MP camera to shoot his images. Most of this work is done in the city of London where he just roams the streets looking for moments to a shot. Below are a few of Stuart’s work.

I like how the image of the beautiful bird on the wall is juxtaposed to the rough, ugly looking rubbish skip. This makes the viewers question whether this was done on purpose or by luck. By making making the aperture really high Stuart has brought out the bright colours in bird and on the rubbish cover.

This image made laugh the first time I saw it. The picture is of a man putting away a magazine which has images of under dressed ladies. The man in the picture looks like a person who works for a business with the way he's dressed. You normally would expect a man of his class wouldn't be reading such a magazine but maybe a newspaper or a book. This image breaks the edge because you can see what the person with the magazine looks like.

Another creative image of Stuart's work, he managed to to get a shot of the man covering his nose with a tomato. The image is framed well with the man being in the mid centre-right with the female in the corner to the left. I like Stuart has made the man the focal point in this picture by blurring out everyone else, the viewers attention is automatically on the man with the tomato.
