Taylor's Documentary Ideas and research First Possible idea: The Truth Of Mental illness This is something i feel very strongly about. since I know a lot of people who are close to me including myself have suffered from mental health issues, such as depression. I also know that is often seen as a tabo topic where people ether have mis constructed images about mental illness or are worried people might be affected or even insulted by them asking. the fact of the matter is one in four of us suffer from some form of mental illness every year. the most common one is depression. the UK has one of the highest suicide and self harming rates in the EU. peoples misconception is normally constructed from lack of information or miss representation in the media (mainly films) for example the different types of mental illness how people suffer from them and even possible symptoms. often being the case people look at mental health illness as something that can be contagious or cause harm to others. when most the time its the victim of the illness is at more risk. so because of this people take a step back when someone says they have mental health issues. this denys people who suffer from these illness the care and attention that they need. the aim of my documentary is to inform people about mental illness from the perspective of the professionals and the people suffering from it. what i propose for this documentary is to do a follow three different people from different parts of the UK with different mental illnesses and at varied levels of intensity. This informative and explorative documentry will let us see what they have to deal with and how they live there day to day life's. We will follow them through the high and lows and look at limitations have been put on there life from there illness. Pros 1. It will educate the audiance on the issues of mental health. 2. It will offer a unique perspective on the issues 3. It will clear any misconceptions on the subject Cons 1. It will be very difficult to film and get the shots that we want simply because of the unpredictable nature of some mental illness. 2. It will be emotionally difficult for both cast and the people we film. 3. Our subjects might not enjoy our intervention so could pull out at any given time. references http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/help-information/mental-health-statistics/ Concreate Circus Second Idea : Making it pro This idea came from watching the channel four documentary Concrete circus. in this documentary they followed three extreme sports superstars including a skate boarder, a parkour team and a trail bike rider as they make there latest film. what i want to do however is do a documentary on someone breaking into the industry and becoming a professional in there own respected sports. How I would approach this is by taking 3-4 different aspects of urban/extreme sports such as skateboarding, BMX, aggressive skating and maybe parkour (they will all be reaserched into so that we know that they are at a level were they are almost profesional) and follow them as they try to make a name for themselves in the industry. watch them enter themselves in competitions and submit videos online. This will include interviews with people who have been there and are currently at a professional level and how they got to there level. The interviews will be local (portsmouth-chichester) professional who compete on the world stage. pros 1. It will be visually interesting as people do things that most would not consider attempting. 2. It will offer an insight into the industry and much social media plays apart in it. 3. It will be an emotional roller coaster as our subjects get success (hopefully) and while some of them will fail. cons 1. With these type of sports some of the things they do are illegal such as trespassing to get to a spot. So this would break the universty ethics board. 2. It is common for injures to take place doing these kind of sports so if one of our subjects breaks a leg we could lose anything up to a month of filming time which could destroy the project, not only that the risks to health and safety of crew would be substantial. 3. A lot of the time these sports take place outside and with the great british weather being unpredictable as it is it might mock up all filming efforts. Third Idea : The next Generation of Gold Medals With Englands success in the 2012 olympics and paraolympics as well as other sporting events such as Cycling and tennis the government has put more funding into sports equipment and training. This is all to encourage hopeful young athletes into pursuing a sporting career, but is that pressure good and what do these young athletes really get from these sports. I want to investigate weather young sport stars and possible olympic hopefuls are being over pressured by there parents and teachers to chase a sporting career and weather the risk of server injury from the sports is worth the possible glory. How I will do this is by approaching clubs that have known sporting talent and investigate how they train there hopeful athletes and what sort of training they put them through. I will look at the sort rules the athletes have to follow to meet there training standards these include exercise regime and diets, I will then see what sort of effect both physical or physiologically there life style takes on them and weather it is a positive one or a negative one. I will also ask these hopeful athletes what they want then relate that back to what the parents or there teachers want and see if it matches. Hopefully I will also follow them to competitions and see them both fail and succeed. pros 1. It will offer an insight in an other wise unknown world 2. It will educated people on what it takes to be a sports start on an international stage 3. it will show a side of sporting that people don't often see cons 1. A lot of training regimes are kept a secret to stop other trainers from stealing it. So a lot of things will be closed of to us at least till we can be trusted 2. Since we may potentially be filming children under the age of 16 we will need the permission of there carers (who ever that may be) and this could mean that to get the interview that we want we will have to represent the athlete in a positive light as well as there training and trainer 3. Being an international athlete is stressful enough but having a camera crew around you daily would only make things worse so they might be less inclined to talk to us unless we become approachable, this means taking time to get to know them which might effect how we cover the topic
